University Human Resources is seeking a HR Specialist to support, develop, implement, and deliver interactive programs that will drive business performance for University Human Resources and support the UI strategic plan. The Specialist will administer, develop, and/or coordinate programs and services in support of career development, supervisor development, inclusive communities, and emerging leaders. The Specialist may also create and deliver professional development in support of key HR practices, including performance management, culture and engagement, DEI, and change management. The Specialist oversees and supports operational functions of OE services and ensures record retention protocols are followed.
This position is eligible for a combination of on-campus and remote work. Work arrangement options will be discussed during the hiring process.
Specific Job Duties and Tasks
- Administer and support the operational activities associated with new and existing programs and services in specialty area.
- Implement and support initiatives and services to support the UI strategic plan, including programs for career development, holistic wellbeing and success, supervisor development, leadership development, change management, and employee engagement.
- Implement and support activities and initiatives to support the distributed HR community on campus.
- Review and recommend changes to systems and processes.
- Monitor status of systems and processes for effectiveness and usage.
- Review program data and pull reports.
- Use data to make recommendations for changes to service delivery.
- Deliver and support professional development programming (series and workshops) with diverse groups of faculty and staff members using innovative strategies, tailored content, and interactive facilitation techniques to create engaging learning environments.
- Define key learning objectives for trainings, programs, and program elements.
- Select suitable delivery methods for achievement of learning and organizational outcomes.
- Implement adjustments to training in response to feedback from participants, and program leaders and sponsors.
- Document and report problems that arise during program sessions.
- Evaluate the quality of programming delivered by the department.
- Administer program activities as assigned.
- Support the Tuition Assistance Program
- Participate in campus-level reward and recognition programs, and support University HR programs, which may include the Improving Our Workplace Award (IOWA) and the Staff Appreciation Grant.
- Carry out strategic initiatives by providing services and/or program support.
- Maintain, update, advise, and train on web content for Organizational Effectiveness.
- Order, launch, and track 360 and other assessments for OE relevant to programmatic needs.
- Evaluate and analyze information and assist in identifying needs and trends.
- Interpret and promote compliance with routine policies/procedures and for a variety of OE programs -
- Recommend policy development related to specific area of specialty.
- Advise on human resource regulations, practices, policies, and procedures; makes decisions and resolves issues within established guidelines or directs to the appropriate resource.
- Distribute appropriate communication materials to employees and leadership within unit/department.
- Support and communicate HR updates and initiatives.
- Provide education/training on routine topics.
- Support the distributed HR community by training and presenting on content relevant to areas of specialization.
- Communicate effectively with diverse audiences, using appropriate media and language; ensure important messages are clearly conveyed and understood.
- Coordinate the delivery of program sessions and their associated activities.
- Coordinate activities using the Learning Management System (My Training).

UHR has advertised a Senior HR Specialist (requisition # 22003666), along with this position. You may apply for one or both positions, however, we are seeking to fill only one opening at either the HR Specialist or Senior HR Specialist level.
Education Requirement
- Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required Qualification
- Experience (typically 6 months) in human resources or program administration in a large organization.
- Demonstrated commitment to and understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Demonstrate effective problem-solving abilities and meets challenges with resourcefulness.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills, active listening skills and the ability to maintain professionalism while handling difficult situations.
- Self-motivated with initiative to seek out additional responsibilities and tasks along with generating suggestions for improving work processes.
- Strong attention to detail and proven ability to gather and analyze data and keep accurate records.
- Experience and proficiency with computer software applications (i.e., Microsoft Office Suite - Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) or comparable programs for the purpose of preparing presentations, reports, and analyzing data.
Desirable Qualifications
- Experience working in a higher education environment.
- Working knowledge of UI policies and procedures.
