The Human Resources Director for the College of Continuing and Professional Studies (CCAPS) is responsible for providing strategic and operational leadership across all human resource and organizational development functions, in coordination with the University's Office of Human Resources. This position is a member of the CCAPS Leadership Team and provides internal direction and consultation on human resources practices and strategies that impact more than 120 staff plus additional academic/adjunct employees.
The director works collaboratively with supervisors and unit directors in CCAPS to ensure strong performance and effective teams. The director plays a lead role in building and enhancing the college's inclusive culture, facilitates staff engagement, and serves as the EOAA Liaison.
This position collects data, draws insights from analysis, develops compelling recommendations, and translates ideas to actions and activities to drive implementation; skillfully challenges conventional practices to advance organizational progress while ensuring actions are grounded in discipline and in alignment with institutional requirements, expectations and priorities. The HR Director reports to the Dean of CCAPS and supervises one Human Resource professional.
The College of Continuing and Professional Studies has a diverse portfolio of program offerings, including preâcollege programs for high school students, English language programs for international students, bachelor’s and Master’s degree programs, professional development courses and certificates for practitioners, lifelong learning for personal enrichment, and a public radio station.
Salary: $107,000 to $117,000 DOQ
Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership - 30%
- Collaborate with CCAPS leadership and stakeholders to advance strategic direction, foster operational effectiveness, facilitate and manage change, and ensure compliance with employment laws, HR policies and best practices.
- Develop, implement, and assess the college's short-term and long-term human resources strategies to foster an effective, equitable, and inclusive environment; anticipate emerging issues that will affect policy and program development within CCAPS. Provide leadership in improving human resources systems and in streamlining human resources practices.
- Through initiatives, policies, and practices, actively foster an environment of equity, diversity and inclusion within the College of Continuing and Professional Studies. Develop strategies and coach supervisors to support a culture of accountability, respect, and employee engagement.
- Provide oversight and leadership on collegiate reporting of HR data; analyze data to make appropriate decisions, in consultation with unit leaders.
Workforce Planning, Organizational Effectiveness, and Engagement - 40%
- Ensure CCAPS is positioned to make the best possible use of existing resources and is staffed appropriately.
- Oversee recruitment and selection of staff and advise on policy and/or strategy. Provide consultation on work, department, and organizational design. Advise on candidate sourcing, search and on-boarding and off-boarding activities.
- Serve as college-wide resource and counsel for business processes related to recruiting to include: employment searches, adjunct instructional appointments, position management, job classification, job postings, search committees, and EOAA matters related to staffing and employment searches.
- Lead professional development and engagement initiatives to increase workplace effectiveness and retain high performing staff. Develop and implement supervisory training and employee development programs incorporating resources available through the Office of Human Resources
Performance Management and Compliance- 20%
- Manage ongoing employee and labor relations issues including investigations, disciplinary action, and grievances. Serve as management liaison for employment related grievances, complaints, and legal action; consult regarding a variety of complex, sensitive, and confidential performance scenarios.
- Direct the college’s annual performance review cycle and oversee a performance management system ensuring timely and effective feedback for employees, aligning with performance management practices and various employment contracts.
- Ensure that HR and related management practices comply with law, policy, contracts in addition to HR and DEI best practices.
- Take appropriate actions to minimize risk, including providing timely and effective investigations, as well as consultation and advice to managers, leaders, and other HR professionals.
Supervision - 10%
- Lead and sustain a strong, flexible human resources unit and provide opportunities for professional learning and development.
- Evaluate employee performance and provide on-going training, development, feedback and coaching to HR staff.
- Ensure that HR staff have the resources, training, and knowledge needed to deliver professional HR services and consultation.
Required:
- Bachelors in Human Resources or related field
- Eight or more years of professional HR experience in areas such as employee/labor relations, talent management, organizational development
- Experience interpreting employment law, regulations, and policies
- Demonstrated success in valuing and actively promoting diversity and an inclusive work environment
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including conflict management,
- Proven analytical thinking and problem-solving experience
Preferred
- Ability to collaborate with and provide counsel to multiple stakeholders
- Experience handling employment investigations and grievances
- Supervisory experience
- HR experience in higher education, government, or non-profit organizations
- Masters in HR or HR certification such as PHR, SPHR, SHRM-CP
