Job Description Provides leadership of the University's Labor Relations function and provides labor and employee relations direction, support and expertise to the University's Operations and Academic divisions. Lead negotiator for certain labor contracts and will help direct and to drive the strategic and administrative initiatives with respect to the labor relations function for the University community, including routine interface with internal partners and external entities such as the U.S. National Labor Relations Board, the American Arbitration Association, and the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service on behalf of the University.
Required Skills
Responsible for supporting all aspects of labor relations on all University's campuses and helping to set strategic labor and employee relations priorities in collaboration with university leadership. Promote harmonious labor relations at the University, as well as demonstrate high level of diplomatic skills, tact, professionalism, knowledge, and empathy with respect to various constituents. Demonstrable ability to maintain the highest level of confidential support, as well as the utmost level of professionalism, ethical leadership, and integrity with respect to all aspects of employment matters.
Serve as Chief Negotiator and representative on behalf of the University for certain major collective bargaining agreements. Engage in the complete administration, interpretation, and enforcement of the Universitys various collective bargaining agreements. Develop and implement University-wide labor management education and coaching for executive leadership, supervisors and managers who lead represented and non-represented employees. Develop, implement, and drive Universitys labor avoidance business strategy.
Work to manage the handling of labor grievances, negotiations, mediations, settlement resolutions, and labor arbitrations properly and effectively on behalf of the University and ensure the maintenance of current data for reporting purposes. Ensure the fair, consistent and efficient administration of the Universitys collective bargaining agreements and strive to ensure the fair treatment of the Universitys workforce in all aspects of labor and employment matters.
Support the HR Business Partners and ensure proper handling of labor relations matters, and certain employee relations matters as appropriate. Direct other University consultants, counsel, and affiliates as appropriate with respect to labor related issues that may impact particular business or academic units, we well as the broader University community.
Demonstrate strong DEI awareness and sensitivity to all aspects of the work in Labor Relations. Work with the Office of the General Counsel as appropriate on labor-related litigation matters. Keep apprised of emerging trends in higher education collective bargaining and other labor relations matters.
Education and Experience:
Minimum of 8+ years direct experience Employee and/or Labor Relations inside of a human resource administration, including two years in employee relations preferred OR its equivalent through training, education, and other experience. SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP
Typically requires a masters degree in related discipline or equivalent related experience, a Juris Doctorate with a focus on employment and labor law is preferred.
