Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School seeks qualified candidates for the position of Director of Human Resources. This is an on-site position with campuses located in Rockville, MD
The Director of Human Resources is a member of the leadership team and reports directly to and is supervised by the Chief Financial Officer and the Head of School. The Director plays a highly visible role providing overall HR direction and support for all employees. The Director partners with senior leadership and directs HR initiatives including all aspects of compensation and benefits administration, recruitment, performance management, progressive discipline, employee relations, employment policies, and monitoring applicable regulatory requirements and employment laws. The Director of Human Resources is expected to role model, promote professional practices, and embody the values and mission of the School within the context of a pluralistic Jewish community.
Essential Duties:
Collaborate with senior leadership to understand the School’s goals and strategy to staffing, talent acquisition, and retention;
Establish hiring, onboarding, and other employment practices and policies; serve as a strategic partner to administrators and managers in all HR matters;
Demonstrated commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice (DEIJ) required;
Conduct research, benchmarking, and analysis on trends in similarly situated independent day schools;
Manage employee benefit plans and updates, including plan documents, summary plan descriptions, regulatory filings, and the annual benefits open enrollment;
Manage outsourced vendor relationships and administration of the School’s health, welfare, and retirement plans;
Advise management to ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local laws related to employee benefits, compensation, employment and training. Remain current with changes in human resource and employment laws;
Act as key advisor on employee relations matters: coach managers, mediate, develop action plans, and counsel employees;
Manage the HR budget and ensure spending is consistent with business needs and reflects good stewardship in the management of school resources;
Build effective working relationships with staff at all levels providing advice and guidance on a broad range of issues, particularly related to workplace culture and productivity; foster the development of others, facilitate teamwork and collaboration;
Maintain personnel records for all school employees in order to provide a comprehensive, efficient, accurate and current record of all matters pertinent to employment;
Direct and maintain various activities designed to promote and maintain a high level of employee morale;
Display a high level of effort and commitment to performing work; operates effectively within the organizational structure; demonstrates trustworthiness and responsible behavior;
Other duties as assigned by the Chief Financial Officer or the Head of School.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Mentor and train part-time Human Resources Generalist and full-time Benefits/HRIS Manager;
Recruit, interview, hire, and train new staff in the department;
Oversee the daily workflow of the department;
Provide constructive and timely performance feedback.

Proficient in full suite of MS Office, including SharePoint
Demonstrated experience using an HRIS and ATS; Paycom preferred but not required
Demonstrated experience with Google Suite
Experience/Education Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field. Master’s degree preferred.
At least five years of human resource management experience is required.
HR certifications are highly preferred.
Demonstrated experience in leading others.
Physical Requirements:
Frequently required to sit, talk, lift, carry, move about, hear and speak.
Must occasionally lift and or move up to 25 pounds.

Work Environment:
