The School of Social Work is looking for an HR Director to join the school's administrative and operational team. This is a new position which will report to the Director of Administration, Finance, and Operations. In this role, you will be the school?s HR subject matter expert, interpreting and developing policies and procedures to ensure compliance with university requirements and alignment with the school's strategic goals. This role is open to hybrid work, as our school allows staff a flexible schedule of up to two remote days per week.
Oversee the complete scope of the school's HR functions related to a broad range of services supporting the needs of faculty (tenured, tenure track, lecturers, joint appointments), staff, graduate employees, and temporary/work-study employees.
Manage a small HR team and work closely with academic program and research staff to manage multiple appointments across the organization.
Collaborate with leadership on new and continuous improvement efforts related to HR programs and strategy. Perform project management, including prioritization, resource and time estimates, and task delegation. Develop and implement human resources strategies, including compensation, recruiting, and performance management. Develop new approaches to continually improve the school's policies, procedures, and the efficiency of the department and services performed.
Analyze HR data to support decisions, create reports for leadership, and make recommendations.
Support staff and managers in workforce planning, workforce climate, coaching, and conflict resolution that helps them make informed decisions and positively impact the school.
Work with HR team to help us manage disability and leave situations, including FMLA, ADA, parental leave, extended sick, long-term disability, and worker's compensation, working directly with institutional disability experts. Provide recommendations based on analysis and help with the implementation of accommodations following the University and other federal regulations.
Provide guidance to managers and supervisors in the use of salary ranges and increase guidelines, job evaluation plans, classification of positions, and job offers.
Partner with search committees in the recruiting and selection process, ensuring recruiting processes are aligned with University and school guidelines. Support may involve helping develop posting descriptions and preparing job postings, developing selection criteria to mitigate bias, and interviewing and selecting candidates.
Help to processing transactions during high-volume periods.
Be a lead member of the school's liaison team to university HR offices including Staff HR and Academic HR.
Promote positive workplace practices for welcoming and onboarding new employees, establishing goals and cultural norms, management, and retention of staff and faculty. Conduct exit interviews with departing employees to identify opportunities for improvement (including educational opportunities for supervisors), balancing employee confidentiality with business needs to affect positive change.
Develop programs and communications to build community and provide professional development opportunities for all employees.
Partner with the SSW Office of Diversity, Equity, and support the administrative implementation of our campus and our school's DEI plan.
Undergraduate degree in human resources, business administration, or related area of study, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Minimum of 5 years of experience in human resources management and organizational development, with significant experience actively partnering with managers and employees to promote an inclusive and positive work environment.
Extensive experience interpreting and implementing HR policies, procedures, and systems, demonstrating a high degree of fluency in a broad range of HR-related areas.
Proven proficiency with HR enterprise software and data query tools and conceptual understanding of how to leverage technology provide analysis and support executive decision-making. Familiarity with the University of Michigan HR systems (including faculty appointment management, LEO and GEO contract management) preferred.
Excellent organizational, problem solving, and communications skills (written, verbal and interpersonal).
Demonstrated ability to exercise tact, diplomacy, confidentiality and a high level of discretion when dealing with highly sensitive information.
Demonstrated interest and ability to promote a positive work culture as well as contribute to, and learn from, a diverse environment of colleagues and students representing diverse populations.
