The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences is recruiting for a Human Resources Manager for Faculty Recruitment.
The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences (PBSCI) within the UW School of Medicine is the third largest clinical department with 285 full-time faculty members, 280 clinical faculty members, and over 300 staff. Department faculty provide clinical services in 5 hospitals, 14 primary care locations, and several outpatient sites in addition to telepsychiatry consultations to more than 150 clinics in Washington and beyond. As the only academic psychiatry department serving the five state WWAMI region (Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, Idaho), the Department’s highly competitive residency training program is largely responsible for developing the mental health workforce in the Pacific Northwest. The Department’s robust research portfolio totals $35 million in grants and contracts per year for projects ranging from clinical neurosciences to treatment development to health policy and population health. The Department is recognized as an international leader in developing, testing, and implementing Collaborative Care, an integrated care model increasingly seen as a solution for population-based mental health care. Other areas of excellence include Addictions, Autism, High Risk Youth, Neurosciences, and Trauma, and the Department is developing innovative new programs in Technology and Mental Health, Global Mental Health, Maternal and Child Mental Health, and Targeted Intervention Development.

The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences within the UW School of Medicine is recruiting for an experienced Human Resources Manager. Psychiatry is the third largest department in the School of Medicine and the largest non-divisioned department. Our department is in a period of growth that will continue with the opening of the new Behavioral Health Teaching Facility in 2024. This individual will report to the Associate Director for Human Resources and will provide general HR support as well as lead our faculty recruitment efforts. The position will be part of a six-person human resources team that supports the department that is composed of an Associate Director for HR, a Human Resources Manager overseeing staff HR processes, a Human Resources Manager overseeing faculty HR processes, a Payroll/Financial Analyst and an HR coordinator. As a unit they provide full support for departmental academic and staff human resources and payroll.
Position Complexities: Given privileged and highly confidential information and trusted to act upon this information accordingly and with discretion; Independently determines the best operating practices and how to implement them for the department; Assigned major department projects which affect all employees; Involved in long-range strategic planning
Position Dimensions and Impact to the University: This position is critical to recruiting and retaining faculty. The department is growing rapidly and this position will play a key role in supporting that growth which contributes to the mission of the School to provide excellent healthcare to the public. This position will also lead DEI efforts in our outreach to current and potential faculty members. It plays a key role in presenting a positive, customer service friendly image of the Department to the public, University officials, School of Medicine officials, and Department faculty, staff, and students. This position is responsible for administering the University's policies for hiring faculty within the Department. It is responsible for administering the faculty appointment and credentialing processes. This position is presented with a variety of complex HR problems daily by faculty and staff and is expected to offer accurate and quick solutions.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 60% - Lead faculty recruitment efforts Work with department faculty and staff on active networking strategies to identify candidates for recruitment Work with external / existing networks (e.g., department chairs, residency program directors) to identify candidates for recruitment Ensure compliance with state, university and federal laws that concern recruitment and hiring Organize and staff recruitment booths at national meetings Manage job postings and advertisements in targeted trade journals and websites Develop and implement recruitment campaigns targeted to third- and fourth-year psychiatry residents (e.g., mailed postcards, emails) Manage a department LinkedIn account focused on job opportunities Develop print and digital recruitment collateral and talking points Keep abreast of information to use in our recruitment efforts (e.g., rankings, why WA is the best state in America, UW Medicine best employer, etc.) Advise leadership on compensation practices for a variety of faculty position types
20 % - Managing Academic Human Resources for New Appointments Process new appointments from start to finish, serving as the key point of contact for all new faculty Participate in new faculty department onboarding and orientation Collaborate with leadership and HR team to develop and improve onboarding practices Ensure faculty are credentialed appropriately with the Office of Medical Staff Appointments
10% Departmental, Faculty and Staff Services Identify process improvement areas in department, write proposals, implement plans, evaluate results. Independently determine the best operating practices and how to implement them for the department related to faculty recruitment. Make independent and sound decisions, which have significant financial and organizational consequences.
10% Other duties as assigned, including backup to Associate Director for HR and AHR Manager
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Bachelor's degree in business, HR, communications or related field Two years work related experiences Experience in recruiting, outreach or networking Demonstrated experience working independently with organizational, planning, time management skills and initiative. Must also be able to work as a member of a team and to collaborate with others
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS Experience at the departmental level in human resources in an academic and/or medical setting Solid understanding of UW personnel policy, State and Federal policies related to human resources. Experience organizing and staffing recruitment booths and in creating recruitment and outreach materials. Experience in Workday. Ability to represent the department and university in positive and engaging ways. Comfort with and ability to express complex employment factors to a variety of audiences
