UW School of Nursing Human Resources and Payroll Services (SoN HRPS) has an outstanding opportunity for an Assistant Director of Human Resources and Payroll Services to join our team. This position engages in and leads a critical central HR and payroll administrative function, providing service, support, and consultation for the School of Nursing faculty and staff, approximately 300 paid employees, as well as unpaid academic and student employees.

Reporting to the SoN OD and HRPS Director, the SoN HRPS Assistant Director of Human Resources and Payroll Services (HRPSAD) position serves a critical operations management and leadership role. It is instrumental in building and refining school processes and practices supporting ongoing needs and SoN's strategic initiatives. In this position, you will part of a seven-person team supporting payroll and human resources for the School of Nursing. The Assistant Director is responsible for HR operations and payroll services, including supervising two professional staff positions.
The Assistant Director of Human Resources and Payroll Services (HRPSAD) will be focused on the day-to-day management of the SoN Human Resources and Payroll Services team and ensure resources and tools are aligned with the academic and personnel needs within the departments and deans' units. Facilitate committee and workgroup discussions related to academic and personnel human resources. In place of DHR, attend internal and external meetings and act on behalf of SoN Human Resources and Payroll Services.
RESPONSIBILITIES Human Resources/Payroll Shared-Services Supervision, Management, and Leadership Operations – manage day-to-day operations of SoN Human Resources and Payroll Services, including supervision of HRPS pro-staff. Ensure all payroll-related actions are processed and aligned with University of Washington payroll practices and completed on time. Identified as the Workday Academic Partner/HR Partner, will coordinate Workday activities and ensure completion; continually assessing organizational processes and throughput. Leading and partnering with SoN Leadership, ensure academic and personnel administration is completed; proactively evaluate procedures and practices and implement changes. Supervision and Leadership – Supervise HRPS staff -responsibilities will include: oversee and delegate workload, performance management, identify training and learning opportunities, conduct annual performance reviews, and review time and absence requests. Collaborate with Administrators, Directors, and supervisors to assess efficiencies within their administrative programs and provide strategic guidance. Utilize human resource networks to ensure consistency with university-wide best practices. Evaluate overall impacts and report to leadership on findings.
Meeting and Committees – In place of HRPSD, and as part of the position, represent SoNHRPS at internal and university-wide human resource related meetings. Develop collaborations across the university and establish participation with peers and others. Participate in, organize, and lead internal meetings and committees.
Collaborative work environment - work with leadership and employees to build and maintain a cohesive and collaborative work environment within the School of Nursing and continuously represent the importance of open and transparent dialogue at all levels and across all levels. Promote an inclusive and diverse work environment and operationalize tools to be utilized school-wide. School of Nursing Mission and Strategic Initiatives – advise on staff and resources' alignment to support SoN's mission and its strategic priorities.
Human Resource and Policy and Procedure Compliance Academic Human Resources - provide guidance to the Chairs and Assistant to the Chairs in the management of academic personnel appointment actions (including appointments, reappointments, promotion, payroll matters, and review processes). Supports HRPSD in serving as a liaison between college and Academic Human Resources when handling faculty performance issues. Work closely with senior SoN leadership, when necessary, to resolve faculty issues. Independently and in collaboration with HRD, resolve complex academic human resource-related matters. Employee Relations – manage performance management and corrective action processes regarding faculty, professional, classified, student, and temporary staff. Advise, implement, and manage plans with directors/managers and facilitate appropriate communications;
Compensation – assess, advise, and confirm salary setting guidelines for directors and managers. Address equity and performance salary-setting concerns across SoN. Review, analyze, promotions, in-grade salary increases, reclassifications, and other salary/position changes, and make recommendations to the HRPSD and SoN Director of Finance and Administration as appropriate.
Policy and Procedures – interpret, apply, and communicate Academic and University of Washington Human Resource policies and procedures. Internal to SoN, draft, implement and communicate policy and procedures that focus on academic and personnel human resources and administrative processes.
Recruitment – partner with hiring managers to create recruitment strategies that address current and future staffing needs and diversity in hiring. Participate in developing and implementing processes used to review, assess position/salary/organization change requests from departments and deans units. Provide recommendations to HRPSD and Director of Finance and Administration. Onboarding/Exit Interviews – create and maintain an onboarding program; oversee SoN employees' life-cycle from recruitment to separation.
Confidential and Sensitive Information – draft and communicate confidential and sensitive information to SoN leadership, managers, staff, students, and AHR/UWHR.
Representation - serve as the liaison with University of Washington Human Resources and Academic Human Resources and other entities throughout UW. Communications – serve as the source for human resource-related information for School of Nursing leadership, faculty, and staff. Develop tools, online and other, to provide up-to-date information that guides with administrative and strategic decisions. Human Resources Projects
Under the direction of the HRPSD, partner with leadership to identify areas of opportunity to concentrate on SoN initiatives, goals, and milestones. Oversee and facilitate discussions for human resource-related committees
Requirements:
Bachelor's Degree in Human Resources, Organizational Development, or Social Sciences AND 6-8 years of human resources experience Supervisory experience: ability to effectively accomplish work through others. Administrative experience: ability to design/refine processes, procedures and programs to most effectively deliver services and track outcomes. Ability to create, interpret, and communicate complex policies and procedures at all levels. Customer service focus - with the ability to work independently with a high degree of reliability, accuracy, and productivity. Intermediate skills with Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint). Ability to perform HR, payroll transitions (initiate, review, approve) in HRIS (Workday, PeopleSoft, etc.) Ability to exercise independent judgment with competing priorities and overlapping deadlines. High-level of discretion with confidential information. Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills in diverse work environments in support of the SoN mission, vision and values.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
Desired: Master's degree in Human Resources, Organizational Leadership, Social Sciences or a related field. HR-related program/project development and management experience Certification as a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) or Society for Human Resources Management Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP).
