Job Description The Senior Director of Employee Relations will plan and manage Boston University's employee relations programs, services, and initiatives. This includes supporting the University's Labor Relations Directorate administration in support of the University's commitment to maintaining a positive, productive, supportive workplace for all employees. The Senior Director of Employee Relations will provide employee relations guidance to managers and other University leaders, as well as University Human Resources staff and department managers. They will also provide leadership on the development and application of Human Resources policies, support the administration of collective bargaining agreements, and compliance with applicable employment and labor laws and regulations.
Required Skills
A bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Labor Relations, Business, or a related field
Ten to twelve years of progressive Human Resources or legal experience, including significant experience in a position that requires knowledge and application of the principles and practices of labor and employee relations
A Juris Doctorate degree and a certification in Certified Labor Relations Professional (CLRP), PHR (Professional in Human Resources), and/or SPHR (Senior Professional in Human Resources) preferred
Extensive collaboration and influential skills
Proficient written/verbal communication skills
HR acumen in areas of data analytics/compensation/service center operations and ability to identify advanced methods to improve overall operations within each team
SAP knowledge and understanding of higher education administration is highly desirable
Must possess presentation skills to meet with diverse audiences
Interpersonal Skills:
Demonstrated knowledge of employee relations, employee counseling, performance management, dispute resolution, negotiation strategy, applicable employment, and labor laws
Demonstrated ability to support and occasionally lead labor contract negotiations in support of the Labor Relations function in a large college, university, or similarly complex organization
Strong analytical, oral presentation, and writing skills
Demonstrated expertise in the use of creativity, initiative, and independent judgment to effectively problem-solve and produce desired outcomes
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with university Human Resources staff, management, legal staff, union representatives, and individual employees
Working Conditions or Additional requirements: Functions occur simultaneously, therefore, the employee must be able to appropriately handle each essential function, prioritize them and seek assistance when necessary. These functions need to be performed on a consistent and regular basis, using good judgment. Frequently stand for long periods of time; ability to read on a computer for extended periods of time. Ability to sit for extended periods of time.
