The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
In consultation with the AVP, the Assistant Director executes and leads human capital initiatives and programs that support Columbia's A&S entities; including talent management, on-boarding and training, organizational designs, non-occupational leaves, policy interpretation and guidance, employee and labor relations.
The assistant director advises and provides guidance to hiring managers full employee lifecycle with specific focus on managing the administrative recruitment process. Creates strategies on sourcing candidates and coaches and participates in hiring committees behavioral interviewing process. The assistant director creates, reviews and approves job requisitions and suggests edits to ensure compliance with A&S and University compliance standards. The assistant director manages the hiring review process; ensuring appropriate and timely communication of hiring decisions to departments. The assistant director actively builds relationships with new hires and works with the AVP, HR to create and execute on-boarding program for administrators to assist in their transition during their first year. The assistant director manages the off-boarding initiatives for administrative staff as well.
The assistant director works closely with the AVP, HR to craft and execute organizational design initiatives and projects across all A&S entities. The assistant director participates in organizational design discussions and takes the lead in managing agreed upon workplans and organizational design activities. The assistant director assists with designing and implementing change management programs and works closely with managers, local HR representatives and employees to help them navigate and adapt to new processes and programs. Acts as a coach and mentor for administrators and is seen as a subject matter expert for Human Capital initiatives.
The assistant director reviews and approves a high volume of transactions generated by the over 60 entities that comprise A&S, and serves as the 1st level approver in the People at Columbia (PAC) systems for HR transaction. The assistant director provides1st level approval for HR accounting related transactions including salary distribution, cost transfers, additional compensation etc. Provides operational support and backup to HR team members as needed.
The assistant director builds relationship with A&S administrators at all levels and acts as a coach and mentor to proactively engage local HR to develop networks and forums to share information that can be leveraged across A&S. The incumbent creates communication plans to keep local HR partners informed of new updates to HR policies and/or procedures.
Performs special projects as needed.
Bachelor's degree and/or equivalent in experience. Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience required.
Experience managing HR programs in a higher educational environment.
Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills are necessary. Must be organized, detail and task oriented with the ability to establish priorities and follow up on multiple issues in a time sensitive manner.
Ability to work under pressure and without supervision and good independent judgment is a must.
Have ability to exercise a high degree of confidentiality, professionalism, diplomacy, discretion, firmness, and collaboration in dealing with individuals at all levels.
Strong analytical and problem solving skills necessary.
Excellent computer skills including thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office, including knowledge of spread sheets required.
Must be able to quickly acquire knowledge of University policies, procedures, and systems
