SCHOOL/UNIT DESCRIPTION: The Office of the Vice Provost and Dean of Research (VPDOR) provides guidance and support to facilitate, nurture and safeguard a thriving research ecosystem at Stanford. To this end, the VPDOR assumes dual roles. As Cognizant Dean for the independent academic units, the VPDOR oversees the program scope and resources for the sixteen multi-disciplinary and independent laboratories, centers, and institutes which operate outside of the schools' boundaries. As Vice Provost and the University's Chief Research Officer, the VPDOR recommends and promulgates new policy and its implementation; manages the mission-support offices that provide services of research compliance and administration, health and safety, and technology transfer to Stanford's research enterprise; oversees the program and appointment of Academic Staff - Research; and advises the President and Provost in a broad array of academic issues pertaining to and beyond research.

POSITION SUMMARY: We are seeking a Senior Director of Human Resources and University Academic Staff Research Program to join the team working under the direction of the Senior Associate Dean for Finance and Operations. You will serve as a chief people advisor for the dean and oversee the full range of human resources strategy and activities for all independent academic units and mission-support research compliance and administrative departments under VPDOR, with more than 760 benefits-eligible staff. In addition, you will oversee the policy formulation and appointment/promotion program of campus-wide Academic staff - Research (AS-R), including research scientists, research engineers, and research scholars, with more than 800 employees. You will manage a team of 5 human resources staff to address these staff related issues, policies, programs, and processes; manage the entire human resources function for the organization and the AS-R program for the university, and maintain accountability for the budget, as assigned. You will work with a high level of independence and exercise a high degree of initiative, influence, and judgment.
You will also work closely with VPDOR unit leaders, Faculty Affairs, and University Human Resources to plan and implement change management efforts related to policies, programs, and/or processes across the VPDOR organization and/or that affect AS-R populations.
This is a 100% FTE, benefits-eligible position. The position will be based on Stanford's main campus and will be considered for an option of hybrid work arrangement, subject to operational need. CORE DUTIES:
VPDOR-wide Human Resources Program * Lead HR engagement initiatives in collaboration with VPDOR's management and senior leadership by having an excellent understanding of the VPDOR's objectives, issues, needs, and key success factors. * Develop organization-specific policies and practices; actively lead the human resources strategy for planning processes, and actively promote best practices. * Design and lead strategies for facilitating organizational and behavioral change. Perform needs assessment and process improvement; make recommendations on organizational design and development issues; establish metrics and monitor trends. * Investigate complex employee relations issues and initiate appropriate resolution; recommend and facilitate effective solutions in alignment with applicable policies and laws; assess risk to the organization and identify compliance issues. Identify and analyze trends; make recommendations for changes/improvements. Coach and advise staff on organizational, employee, and labor relations issues. * Participate in setting organizational objectives and goals, and oversee the performance management process for VPDOR. Provide relevant training and guidance to managers and employees; initiate and/or direct appropriate interventions; independently handle and/or manage redesign and reassignment efforts. * Identify, direct, and/or deliver the training and development planning for individuals and groups; lead organizational and team effectiveness assessment. * Direct talent management program (recruitment, retention, workforce planning, and staff development), and collaborate with University Human Resources to provide effective recruitment methods for assigned areas. Structure complex offers; support or lead high level and complex searches; advise on affirmative action objectives. * Manage VPDOR's salary-setting program; develop guidelines for program implementation. Advise managers on assignment of employees to appropriate classification levels; design incentive and bonus programs. * Oversee processes for workers' compensation, disability, leave, workplace accommodation requests, and health and safety issues; inform managers as needed. Collaborate with University Human Resources and other university stakeholders administering these functional areas. Act as a resource to others in the VPDOR organization, and ensure the accurate documentation and retention of record-keeping.
University-wide Academic Staff-Research Program
* Advise academic leadership on Academic Staff - Research (AS-R) policies, programs and priorities. Responsible for devising internal policies, procedures, training, administration and compliance with regulations in partnership with Faculty Affairs and University Human Resources. * Establish, maintain and enhance university salary structure for AS-R. * Manage the appointment of more than 800 AS-R employees at Stanford. Advise academic leadership or administrators on appointment, promotion, and compensation matters. * Consult senior leadership on university-wide strategies and initiatives to support and develop AS-R. Conduct ongoing needs assessment and improvement of the AS-R program, including the information technological system; direct and facilitate organizational development plans, strategies and implementation. * Actively advocate with University Human Resources for leadership and training programs for AS-R. Direct, facilitate or coordinate development of programs to provide job enhancement and career growth for AS-R.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education & Experience: * Bachelor's degree and eight years relevant experience, or a combination of education and relevant experience. * Familiarity with the academic or research environment is desirable.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: * Demonstrated experience as a consultant and advisor to senior management in all human resources areas, including: employee relations, employment and labor law, compensation, staffing and employment, training and development, performance coaching and management, and organizational development. * Exceptional interpersonal skills and understanding of group dynamics. * Successful track record of establishing credibility and trust with a diverse client group, including senior leaders. * Demonstrated leadership skills and management courage. * Strong analytical, critical thinking, creative problem solving, judgment, negotiating, influencing, and strategic decision-making skills. * Ability to maintain confidentiality, tact, and diplomacy. * Demonstrated ability to advise on and implement organizational change. * Demonstrated end-to-end experience in the development and execution of organization-wide initiatives. * Excellent facilitation and oral and written communication skills; ability to prepare clear and concise reports and deliver formal presentations or training to senior management and other audiences. * Strong supervision/management and staff development experience. * Demonstrated proficiency with business applications, such as Microsoft Office suite, Smartsheet, Google Drive suite, and human resources information systems.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*: * Frequently stand/walk, sit, use a computer; use a telephone, grasp lightly/fine manipulation. * Occasionally reach/work above shoulders, twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasp forcefully, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds, write by hand, sort/file paperwork. * Rarely kneel/crawl, operate foot and/or hand controls. * - Consistent with its obligations under the law, the University will provide reasonable accommodation to any employee with a disability who requires accommodation to perform the essential functions of the job.

The expected pay range for this position is $173,000 to $255,000 per annum. Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
