Oversees programs, services and initiatives that positively move the needle on fostering equal opportunity for all staff and faculty. Oversees a team of specialized professionals dedicated to serving the Washington University community regarding occupational and educational enrichment through employment equity, discrimination and harassment prevention, and related culture/climate initiatives. Monitors compliance with laws, policies and procedures related to discrimination and accommodation. A formal legal background is not required, but federal compliance and reporting responsibilities are important. Must value the importance of process, and be able to design and implement procedures for responding to complaints from University constituents and external inquiries from agencies such as the EEO Commission and the DoEâ™s Office for Civil Rights.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
Supports the mission of the University by overseeing institutional compliance with equal opportunity laws and practices and by working to strengthen a culture that supports a safe and non-discriminatory living, learning, and working environment.
Disseminates training, information and best practices about laws, policies, and procedures regarding equal opportunity, disability, harassment, discrimination and retaliation.
Oversees the investigation and resolution of reports alleging discrimination, harassment, and/or retaliation; continuously reviews and seeks to identify patterns of discrimination and harassment and develops measures to address them.
Plans and develops the Universityâ™s affirmative action plan (AAP) on an annual basis, oversees its implementation, and reviews employee recruitment, hiring, and other personnel actions for compliance.
Coordinates, develops and oversees a comprehensive, engaging and proactive training, education and awareness program for all faculty and staff in partnership with appropriate campus partners; coordinates cross-institutional efforts, focusing on alignment, efficiency and effectiveness.
Supports efforts to establish and maintain a culture of assessment, benchmarks, and metrics in relation institutional equity.
Performs other duties as required.
The work is normally performed in the offices located across the universityâ™s campuses.
There will be activities that require trips to many University offices and offsite locations.
Advanced degree in law, labor relations, or human resources management, law or a related field.
Fifteen years of prior human resources experience.
SPHR or SHRM- SCP designation.
Relevant industry-based HR experience.
Demonstrated abilities to include:
Substantive knowledge of and experience in applying nondiscrimination laws/policies in a university setting.
Knowledge of principles, best practices and standards of equal opportunity and personnel-related investigative work.
Fundamental understanding of and commitment to promoting and sustaining the benefits of equity and diversity in higher education.Â
Demonstrated excellent judgement and strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to build partnerships and collaborations across the university.
Solid negotiation and conflict management skills.
Strong organizational skills.
Ability to manage multiple priorities and projects.
Bachelorâ™s degree in HR, business, or a related field.
Minimum of fifteen years of prior human resources experience in progressively more senior roles.
Advanced degree may be in lieu of experience.
