The Office of the Provost at Michigan State University is seeking a Senior HR Professional I. Reporting to the Associate Provost and Associate Vice President for Faculty and Academic Staff Affairs, the successful candidate will manage and lead executive-level position search processes that secure world-class leadership talent. The position will also be responsible for managing the performance review program for eighteen deans as well as management of faculty and academic staff affairs strategic projects and initiatives.
Executive-Level Position Searches
Lead the executive-level position search processes for deans, associate provosts, and the provost cabinet from start (e.g., position planning) to finish (e.g., onboarding of the successful candidate).
Lead and manage the logistics of the recruitment planning processes including the selection of search firms, the development of the search process framework for each search as informed by college or university bylaws, identification, and seating of members of each search committee, the creation of position descriptions, and the posting of positions through the university’s applicant tracking system.
Build effective relationships with each search committee, serve as a trusted and experienced leader, coordinate and attend search committee meetings, and provide support on the dissemination of candidate materials and interview materials.
Serves as the point of contact for all inquiries related to the search process.
Keep the provost, college, and university communications teams up to date on the status of ongoing searches.
Manage the logistics for candidates and create a positive candidate experience through the scheduling of candidate interviews and on-site visits, coordinating services, arranging travel and hotel reservations, and processing candidate reimbursements for travel.
Work closely with the Provost and the Associate Provost for Faculty and Academic Staff Affairs to keep them informed of progress and resolve any issues.
Maintain an organized archive system for search documents.
Work collaboratively with all stakeholders by incorporating diverse perspectives and appropriately managing relationships.
Dean Performance Review Process
Lead and manage the 1-year, 3-year, and 5-year performance review program for approximately 20 Deans and the Associate Provosts as well as the annual evaluation processes for and other senior academic leaders.
Advise the Provost and the Associate Provost for Faculty and Academic Staff Affairs on the process, timeline, and protocol for each dean and/or senior academic leader review.
Manage, maintain, and update the performance review schedule for the deans.
Administer the dean review surveys and manage/summarize results.
Other faculty affairs duties as assigned.
The successful candidate will provide strong leadership and decisive and effective management of critical executive leadership processes and faculty affairs projects; interact and build positive relationships with faculty, staff, administrators, executives, trustees, students, and visitors; complete work expeditiously with frequent interruptions, handling diverse and multiple tasks and details, and prioritize work; take initiative by assessing situations and independently take action to address it; exercise a high degree of emotional intelligence, displaying candor, integrity, and diplomacy at all times; implement sound judgment and maintain strict confidentiality.
Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills
This job requires:
A bachelor’s degree in Human Resources Administration, Business Administration, Labor and Industrial Relations, or a related field
Three to five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in talent acquisition, employee recruitment, and/or project management
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Excellent verbal and written skills
Demonstrated decision-making and problem-solving skills
Proactive-oriented and takes initiative
Strong attention to detail, superb follow-through, and excellent time management
Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Strong knowledge of candidate selection methods
Knowledge of university organization, academic hiring policies, and procedures
Strong organizational skills
Excellent grammar, writing, editing and proofreading skills
Experience with processing transactions in the SAP HR/Payroll and Kuali Financial Systems and Cognos Business Intelligence reporting
Ability to interpret information to coordinate projects and respond to questions
Demonstrated work orientation that includes a service focus, teamwork, and adaptability to change.
