The Attorney will function as a key legal partner to human resources personnel and leaders on employment law matters and overall compliance with global, federal and local employment and labor laws. The successful candidate will report to the Deputy General Counsel or General Counsel depending upon experience and will work directly with her or his business counterparts, as well as other legal and compliance staff; and will function as a member of the Textron Aviation legal department. This position will be embedded with the human resources department.
The successful candidate must be an approachable and proactive legal business partner with an “open door” attitude. Demonstrated expertise in employment and labor law matters is necessary.

Provide timely, practical and business-oriented legal advice on a range of employment issues, including: hiring, performance management, employee relations, personnel policies, leaves of absence and accommodations, discrimination and harassment, wage and hour, internal investigations, discipline and termination, compensation, and benefits.
Support the investigation and response to claims, demand letters, administrative complaints, audits, and other employment-related inquiries.
Participate and support investigations and mediations before administrative agencies including the EEOC, DOL and NLRB.
Manage employment related litigation, including responding to attorney demand letters, effectively negotiating resolution of claims, and making recommendations to Human Resources and senior management on corrective action. Critically supervise and manage outside counsel to ensure high quality, cost-effective service through developing and monitoring budgets and oversight of outside counsel on employment litigation matters.
Support the Company’s ethics & compliance program, including advising on and assisting in investigation of reports of violations of the Textron Business Conduct Guidelines, law, and policy, and recommending action to prevent or mitigate potential legal claims.
Support internal communications to employees.
Develop and deliver training on various preventive and substantive legal matters for leadership and the business.
Participate in the Textron enterprise-wide employment practice group.
Participate in and support other legal and compliance matters and activities, as required.
Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school and eligible for admission to the Kansas bar.
10+ years of experience preferred involving a full range of employment and labor issues.
Familiarity with key employment laws and related regulations, including Title VII discrimination laws, ADA, ADEA/OWBPA, FMLA, FLSA, WARN Act, USERRA, NLRA, etc
Experience in the aviation or other manufacturing industry is preferred.

Proven track record of confronting and successfully resolving complex legal, employment, and compliance matters with significant financial and business impact.

Strong interpersonal skills and ability to interact effectively, work diplomatically, be approachable, and foster relationships with individuals at all levels including internal contacts, outside attorneys and vendors.
Highly developed written and oral communication skills, with the ability to clearly articulate recommendations and options regarding complex legal issues.

Ability to effectively manage multiple assignments simultaneously with a minimum amount of supervision.

Computer literacy, including competency with Microsoft Office suite applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint) and legal research tools (Westlaw and/or LexisNexis); database familiarity desirable, but not required; working knowledge of matter management applications a plus.
