The Boyce Thompson Institute (BTI) is a premier life sciences research institution located in Ithaca, New York on the Cornell University campus. BTI scientists conduct research and communicate science with the goals of increasing food security, improving environmental sustainability in agriculture, and enhancing human health.
Responsible for a wide range of Human Resources duties focused on employee onboarding, offboarding and employee relations.
Essential Job Functions
Oversee the employee recruiting and on-boarding process, including:
Posting new positions.
Working with the supervisor to hire the candidate.
Conduct new hire orientation.
Assist new employees with enrolling in Cornell services.
Process all new hire paperwork and add to BTI systems.
Develop and maintain materials for employee on-boarding process.
Perform employee relations duties, respond to employee inquiries, and assist employees with employment issues.
Oversee the administration of the Affirmative Action Plan, including:
Compilation of affirmative action plan data
Development and execution of affirmative action initiatives
Oversee the employee departure process, including:
Meet with the employee to go over separation form and exit procedure.
Remove from BTI systems.
Assist with administration of benefits program, including processing benefits enrollments and changes.
Maintain confidential personnel files and other human resources records.
Serve as back-up for payroll processing as needed.
Prepare monthly group insurance invoices for payment.
Other duties as assigned.
This position is based in Ithaca, NY. BTI offers flexibility in working arrangements at the discretion of the supervisor and in accordance with Institute policies. Relocation costs will not be covered for this position.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions
The work is conducted in an office setting. The work is sedentary with extended periods of sitting. Some walking, standing, bending, and carrying or lifting of small items. Generally no adverse environmental conditions are present.

Education and Certification
Associates Degree in human resources, business, or related field preferred.
Experience and Knowledge
1-2 years of human resources experience.
Effective written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills required. Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of the organization. Ability to maintain confidentiality.
The position requires the proficiency in business applications. Previous HRIS experience preferred.
