The Director of Human Resources (HR) for the School of Dentistry (SoD) is responsible for providing strategic leadership across all human resource and organizational development functions, in connection with the University’s central Office of Human Resources. The SoD HR Director reports to directly to the Dean of the SoD. This position will provide consultation and direction on human resources practices and strategy to SoD’s senior leadership, as well as managers, supervisors and employees within SoD. Additionally, this role administers and interprets University of Minnesota human resources policies, programs and practices and supervises a team of HR professionals.

Dutiesand Responsibilities include:
Strategic Leadership, Planning and Supervision
Supervise and provide leadership to the SoD HR team, providing human resources services for SoD, which includes more than 1000 employees across all University employee groups (faculty, administrative, civil service and labor represented).
Evaluate performance and provide feedback and coaching to SoD HR team members.
Ensure HR team has resources, training, and knowledge needed to deliver professional HR services to stakeholders.
Lead the assessment, development, implementation and evaluation of the School of Dentistry (SoD) short-term and long-term HR strategies, ensuring alignment with University policy and practice. Anticipate emerging issues and trends that are likely to impact SOD.
Provide consultation to SoD Leadership Team to advance the school’s strategic direction.
Manage HR and workforce budgets to include appropriately allocating resources, forecasting and monitoring unit expenses.
Represent SoD in a variety of UMN HR forums, including the Health Sciences and Office of Human Resources (OHR).
Ensure HR and related management practices comply with law, policy, contracts and rules related to Human Resources.
Maintain knowledge of and ensure HR team members’ knowledge of critical employment laws.
Oversee investigations into alleged violation of employment laws or policies.
Consult with management, faculty, staff and HR team on labor union contract and UMN HR policy interpretation, practice and precedent.
Conduct investigations into employee complaints and advise on response to complaints; consult with departmental or division leadership on specific issues related to employee performance and behavior.
Provide leadership and guidance for HR team and managers/supervisors on corrective action process, including labor grievances, as defined in union contracts or UMN policy.
Lead and assess the performance management process across SoD, ensuring alignment with Health Sciences and University practices and policies.
Provide escalation for consultation and investigation of HR issues that are particularly complex or sensitive, including partnering with Health Science Human Resources and/or the Office of Human Resources as necessary.
Oversee SoD’s annual performance review cycle and merit pay plans.
Manage and facilitate a culture committed to positive employee and labor relations.
Work with SOD leadership to facilitate actions to maintain and improve levels of staff and faculty engagement. Consult with SOD leadership, management and staff in communicating and interpreting SoD employee engagement survey results.
Foster diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of SoD’s HR practices.
Workforce Planning/Compensation & Benefits
Oversee the recruitment and selection processes of staff and faculty and advise on policy, strategy, and organizational design.
Develop staffing and recruitment strategies for use across SoD. Provide leadership for all academic appointments, searches, salary adjustments, compensation, classification and payroll function.
Provide consultation and guidance on succession planning for key SoD positions and functions.
In consultation with SOD leadership, provide advice and expertise on evaluating appropriate starting salaries and salary increase requests, ensuring equitable salaries among comparable work groups and competitive compensation in the market and evaluating internal equity within SoD.
In consultation with SOD leadership, set or maintain policies and practices related to SoD compensation, including special pay situations.

BA/BS in Human Resources or related field, plus 10 years of related professional HR experience to include supervisory responsibilities
Working knowledge of employment laws, rules and regulations affecting human resources

Advanced Degree in related field
PHR/SPHR certification or equivalent
Experience interpreting collective bargaining agreements and with CBA corrective action and grievance processes
Experience in higher education, health care and/or public sector employment setting
Skills and/or training in change management and conflict resolution
