UC San Diego Athletics is reclassifying to NCAA Division I as a member of the Big West Conference. UC San Diego won its eighth California Collegiate Athletic Association Commissioner's Cup title in 2018-19, an award symbolizing the best overall athletics department in the conference.
Under the supervision of the Director of Business Operations, the HR Generalist is responsible for the day-to-day administration of human resource services for the Athletics department. Provide professional services and manage the implementation of policies, programs and procedures related to: staffing & recruitment; employee/labor relations; compensation & classification; leaves/FMLA, phased retirement, personnel/payroll & benefits; worker’s compensation; staff recognition & development & training; human resource information systems and records management.
The Athletics Department consists of close to 400 employees (86 full-time, 140 part-time, 100 student employees and 60 volunteers) which include contract coaches, by-agreement and union represented employees. Develops HR best practices for accomplishing management goals and serves as the principal consultant to the Director of Business Operations, directors, supervisors and staff for human resources policy. The incumbent will follow the athletic philosophy consistent with that of the UC San Diego Athletic Department and NCAA, and a commitment to diversity in all of its forms.

Strong analytical skills to conduct analysis and develop recommendations. Proven organizational skills and problem-solving skills. Working knowledge of other areas of HR.
Experience conducting various personnel activities, such as recruitment selection, discipline, termination/layoff, collective bargaining agreements, employee relations, labor relations, performance appraisals, benefits administration, compensation, job description development, diversity, etc.
Basic knowledge of human resources policies and programs, and how they affect other organizational policies and procedures. Solid understanding in recruitment, performance management, compensation, payroll, benefits, affirmative action, visas, discipline, conflict resolution, and collective bargaining units.
Excellence in communicating clearly and effectively verbally and written and in integrating information in the completion of assignments. Strong oral and written communication skills to communicate and interact with persons of diverse backgrounds and personalities. Ability to convey technical information and provide guidelines in a clear and professional manner, using diplomacy, tact and discretion in all interactions.
Demonstrated experience administering leaves of absence related to FMLA, CFRA, PDL. Knowledge of issues and procedures related to disability, accommodation and worker's compensation.
Knowledge of a human resources management system (HRMS), and/or other related business software programs and systems. Demonstrated ability in utilizing technology resources and computer applications such as Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint and Access), internet browsers.
Thorough knowledge with wage and hour laws, and other laws and regulations relating to employment, compensation, collective bargaining, discrimination, harassment, retaliation, EEO/AA and FLSA.
Proven experience providing advice to leadership, supervisors, and employees on performance issues/concerns as well process and policy information.
Demonstrated ability to manage and coordinate department training program.
Thorough knowledge of organizational policies and procedures and knowledge of functional area. Experience in interpreting, analyzing, advising on, and implementing policies, procedures, and regulations related to all facets of human resources administration.
Strong organizational skills. Ability to prioritize time, plan, and follow projects through to completion. Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and meet multiple deadlines in a dynamic environment with numerous interruptions and fluctuating priorities. Ability to develop and adjust routines and procedures as needed.

•UC San Diego sponsors 23 intercollegiate sport programs that currently compete in the Big West Conference, Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, Western Water Polo Association, Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association, and Western Fencing Conference.
•As of fall 2020 all Triton athletic teams compete at the NCAA Division I level, with the exception of the men's volleyball, men's and women's water polo, and men's and women's fencing programs, which compete at the NCAA “National Collegiate” level. Men's rowing is not sanctioned by the NCAA and competes as a member of the Intercollegiate Rowing Association.
•During its recently-concluded 20-year affiliation with NCAA Division II, UC San Diego consistently ranked as one of the most successful athletic programs in the nation, ranking among the top 10 nationally in the Learfield/IMG College Directors' Cup in 20 of the last 25 years – five of which were Division III. The program claimed the Director's Cup title as a member of Division III in 1998 and finished as runner-up three times while in Division II, including 2018-19.
•UC San Diego intercollegiate athletic programs have claimed 30 NCAA national championships in team sports, while 44 have finished as national runners-up and 49 achieved 3rd-place honors. Individually, 138 Triton scholar-athletes have earned national titles. All told, UC San Diego has won 276 national, regional, and conference championships.
•The most recent NCAA report indicates scholar-athletes at UC San Diego own a 4-class average graduation rate of 91 percent, the highest among Division II institutions and sixth among all institutions in Divisions I and II.
•Triton scholar-athletes have earned an impressive 1,389 All-America honors for athletics achievement over the years, while 82 have been named to Academic All-America teams and 37 have been awarded prestigious NCAA Post Graduate Scholarships.
•During its time as a member of the California Collegiate Athletic Association, UC San Diego claimed eight Robert J. Heigert Commissioner's Cup titles, including the 2018-19 season. The award is given to the CCAA member institution with the highest aggregate ranking in eight of the league's 13 championship sports.
