GENERAL SUMMARY The Director of Human Resources will optimize relationships of faculty, staff, managers, and senior leadership; linking human resources strategies to the school’s culture and objectives: ensuring compliance with all labor laws; counseling and advising management on a variety of topics related to talent and changes within the school. Driving excellence across Idyllwild Arts through effective problem solving and communication is critical to success. This position reports to the Vice President, Finance, and is a liaison to the senior leadership of the foundation.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES/PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES • Act as Human Resources strategist, change agent, and implementation advisor. • Oversee Human Resources Manager, payroll, benefits program processing, hiring process, proper maintenance of files and records, and other items as needed. • Develop, implement, and maintain the school’s personnel policies and procedures, employee handbook, personnel forms, Labor Law posters to ensure effective compliance with applicable employment regulations. • Ensure all plans comply with applicable laws and statutes (HIPPA, ERISA, EDD, and IRS guidelines) including filing and distributing all necessary forms and notices. • Provide consultations on engagement & retention of staff, faculty, and leadership. • Drives and manages performance management processes including coaching leaders and managers on tough conversations, co-creating performance improvement plans, and ensuring leaders are following through with the annual process. • Consults with management on internal movement decisions; transfers, promotions, job enhancements and ensures decisions are in line with company policy and leveling guides. • Conduct employee relations investigations and consult with managers and legal counsel on outcomes and next steps. • Co-facilitate training and development programs with managers and leadership. • Delivers change management consultation to leadership. • Consults with leadership on personnel management and organizational design challenges.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE • Experience of working in an independent school environment, preferably a boarding school. • Experience with managing complex and cross-functional initiatives, processes, or projects. • Exposure to and comfort working with a leadership team and President. • Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 7 years of increasingly responsible human resources experience.
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE • Continuous improvement mindset. • Solid and sophisticated skills in consulting, contracting, mediating, negotiating, coaching. • Experience in compensation, recruiting, employee relations, and organizational development is required to support the organization. • Ability to communicate effectively with people at all levels in the organization and to deal with multiple priorities, functions, and activities. • A service-oriented demeanor with demonstrated tact, discretion and diplomacy, and an attention to detail. • Thorough and deep knowledge of the employee life cycle. • Experience in leading or contributing to small to medium scale re-organizations, organizational alignment, and workforce planning efforts.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms, lift up to 15 lbs. Be able to walk over uneven terrain on campus.

Idyllwild Arts is a co-ed boarding and day school for 275 students in grades 9-12. The Summer Program, founded in 1950, is an eight-week program that brings more than nearly 2,000 children, teens, and adults to Idyllwild each summer.
