Basic Function: Provides leadership in developing and executing HR strategy that supports Lovett’s overall strategic direction while leading a team of HR professionals for a progressive K-12 independent school with approximately 1,000 full and part-time employees. Directs and coordinates all human resources activities including employment, compensation, compliance, employee relations, benefits, employee services, and policy development. Drives business value through designing and implementing policies that advance the organization. Coordinates with senior leadership of the school, serving as a trusted business partner for the leadership team as well as the HR Committee of the Board.
Essential Functions of Position
Ensures that Lovett is in full compliance with applicable federal and state laws regarding human resources and the administration of employee benefits. This includes, but is not limited to, compiling data for annual 5500 returns for ERISA welfare benefit and pension benefit plans, consulting with benefit firm preparing the returns, as well as completing annual reporting needs (such as 990s and 5500s)
Develops and maintains the school’s personnel policy, procedures, employee handbook, personnel forms, and recommends changes to school administration
Provides training to all administrators, managers and supervisors on applicable employment laws (ADA, FMLA, etc.) re: interviewing, discipline, terminations, etc.
Conducts an annual review of existing benefits programs for necessary changes and improvements. Negotiates contracts and services with employee assistance program providers, background reporting agencies, and drug screen providers
Directs preparation and distribution of communications to inform employees of benefits programs such as insurance plans, retirement plans, paid time off, bonus pay, and special employer sponsored activities
Ensures compliance with all 403b regulations – new plan document, SPD, annual audit, etc.
Employee Relations and Performance Management:
Builds positive relationships across the organization, brings the employee perspective to relevant strategic human capital initiatives, promotes employee satisfaction and wellness and ensures a positive working environment
Consult, influence, and partner with all levels of management regarding critical and complex employee relations decisions in the areas of performance management, harassment, business conduct, terminations, restructuring, policies, guidelines, and best practices
Ensure associate relation investigations are timely, objective, thorough, documented, and escalated in adherence to company policies, processes, and standard methodologies
Partner with legal counsel on assessing and resolving employment-related concerns and risks, lawsuit discovery, and litigation preparation
Staffing, Recruiting and Onboarding:
Works in conjunction with leadership on the strategic planning process for staffing needs of the school. Coordinates recruitment with school departments and application processing. Oversees background screening for all new employees (reference checks, criminal history, MVR, and drug screen)
Manages new employee orientation process
Management and Leadership:
Take accountability for the development and growth of the Human Resources team
Provides learning platforms for continual learning for all employees
Position Requirements (knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform satisfactorily in the position):
A minimum of 10+ years of experience in high-impact Human Resources organizations
Bachelor’s degree in human resources or related field; master’s degree, PHR, and SPHR highly desirable
Comprehensive knowledge of Human Resources principles, procedures and practices. Expertise in federal, state, and local employment, wage, and salary laws and regulations, including, but not limited to, EEO, FLSA, FMLA, ADA, and OSHA
Experience with recruiting, onboarding, succession management, change management, organization/leadership development, performance management, budgeting, and employee engagement in a mid-sized organization
Demonstrated global and cultural awareness
Ability to communicate effectively at all levels of the organization
Outstanding organizational skills required, ability to deal expertly with multiple priorities
Strong attention to detail and follow-through required.
