Grist, the leading national environmental media non-profit, is seeking a part-time (.5 FTE) Sr Advisor, HR. This role reports directly to the Director, Finance & Administration, and will help create and manage Grist’s nascent Human Resources function. The position is also a member of Grist’s leadership team and works closely with the CEO.
Grist is in an exciting chapter of growth and innovation as we expand our creative coverage, journalism, special projects, and leadership work on the most existential challenge of our time: the climate crisis. The ideal candidate for this role brings leadership experience in HR and an excitement to help our HR function grow and scale to match the growth in our work and our team.
Create a scalable HR function maximizing effectiveness and efficiency through business alignment, technology, and documented processes
Assess, manage and reduce local and national employment regulation compliance risk
Define employee lifecycle and implement repeatable process that gets us "brilliant at the basics"
Act as a leadership coach and employee advocate
Oversee and help administer recruiting, onboarding, performance management, learning and development, compensation and benefits, and other areas across HR
Coach, mentor and manage HR staff
Be a culture evangelist and role-model
Depending on experience, manage and oversee legal work, including contracts, real estate, compliance and other areas requiring legal oversight

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience
SPHR certification preferred
10+ years’ experience leading an HR function/team across diverse organization types and sizes, but must include prior start-up experience
Integrity, passion and strong ability to follow through on commitments
Strong preference for this position to be based in Seattle, WA
Additional Salary Information: This is a part-time position (.5 FTE). Compensation is dependent on experience and qualifications. Schedule to be determined in collaboration with the CEO. Seattle-based candidates only.
