Johnson County, Kansas – a thriving, well-educated community located in the Greater Kansas City Metropolitan Area – is seeking a new Director of Human Resources. The Director of Human Resources will lead a team of 26 highly-skilled staff and oversee all human resources services in a high performing organization characterized by excellence in service delivery, collaboration across departments, and empowering leadership and continuous improvement at all levels of the organization.
The Director of Human Resources is responsible for the daily operations of the Department of Human Resources (HRD), which includes recruitment, onboarding, and retention of a diverse workforce; compensation and classification; employee relations; learning and development; recognition; and employee records and data.
Payroll, benefits, and risk management are overseen by the Treasury & Financial Management Department, and HRD staff work closely with this department on key workforce strategies and initiatives.
The salary range is $117,325-$175,987, DOQ, with an excellent benefits package. Residency is not required.

Experience and Education
Minimum requirements include any combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in Human Resources Management, Industrial or Organizational Psychology, Business or Public Administration, Sociology, or a closely related field and 10 years of progressively responsible HR experience as a generalist (which may include some or all of employment/AA/EEO, classification and compensation, employee benefits, risk management, employee/labor relations, organizational development/training and development, employee assessment, and HRIS/records management/employee records). Five years of administrative and supervision experience is also required.
Preferred qualifications include a master’s degree, at least five years of public sector HR experience, and knowledge of high performing organization (HPO) principles. SPHR, SHRM-SCP, and IPMA-SCP certifications are also preferred. If the successful applicant does not have any of these certifications, they will be expected to receive one certification within the first 18 months of employment.
A valid driver’s license and the ability to travel outside of Johnson County and the Greater Kansas City region are required.
