The University of Washington’s Finance Shared Services Department has an outstanding opportunity for a Human Resources Director. Reporting to the Vice President for Finance, the HR Director supports a comprehensive range of responsibilities, including strategic leadership of HR operations, HR team oversight/development, overseeing payroll and leave, and resolution of complex employee relations issues in a union environment. This position is also heavily responsible for leading organizational development initiatives in a changing UW Finance setting due to the implementation of a new financial system and new financial business processes. This position will work in a quickly evolving setting to prepare the organization for change while maintaining core, stable operations.
The HR Director provides strategic guidance around HR activities to mitigate risk and optimize resources, and requires proficient working knowledge of Human Resources policies/operations. This position will be the strategic leader for organization development and vibrancy and managing processes for employee recruitment, retention and compliance.
The position will partner with central HR to develop hiring plans that meet the evolving needs of the organization. Further, this position is responsible for working closely with leadership and central HR to manage complicated employee relations issues, resolve employee complaints, and complete a wide variety of HR personnel actions. This position is responsible for oversight and development of a team of four HR Business Partners who support the full UW Finance organization (approximately 550 FTE).
Human Resources and Payroll/Leave Leadership •Ensure that the organization’s employment practices are in compliance with the human resources policies and procedures of the University. Develop policies and department guidelines as needed. •Create strategic recruitment program to meet staffing requirements and fill positions based on the appropriate classifications from the University's classified and professional staff systems. •Develop and maintain efficient and effective on-boarding and orientation process for new employees. Coordinate off-boarding procedures. •Develop and implement training and retention programs for an evolving organization where staff duties will be changing due to financial system transformation. •Advise managers and directors regarding position classifications, organizational structure and salaries. Initiate all department hiring, promotions, salary actions, and terminations for staff personnel. •Ensure timely and accurate entry of Workday Data. •Advise managers and staff regarding leave management; Monitor leave usage for the department [e.g. sick leave, annual leave balances, Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) and disability accommodations]. •Maintain personnel files. Ensure appropriate confidentiality for all records. •Oversee performance management processes and work with central HR to resolve issues, ensuring that University policies and procedures are followed. Provide coaching to supervisors to assist in managing performance to achieve optimal outcomes •Work closely with the University's Human Resources offices as appropriate.
Organization Development •Support the VP of Finance in leadership development initiatives to support the enhancement of a highly functioning leadership team. •Work with individual teams/units within UW Finance to support team-building/team improvement work as needed. •Develop new HR programming to support comprehensive improvements to the employee climate/experience within UW Finance. •Partner with managers on reorganizations of teams in order to accommodate a changing business environment; work closely with central HR to ensure all reorganizations follow UW policy/procedure.
Supervision and Leadership •Supervise a team of four HR Business Partners, including hiring, training and performance management. •Coordinate and lead teams for department and university-wide projects. Bring together appropriate team members; facilitate project work; prepare reports; plan and implement communication plans. •Develop and maintain appropriate internal controls and quality assurance measures.
Projects and Other Responsibilities •Oversight of records management and retention in accordance with the State of Washington and University policies. •Complete special projects assigned by the Vice President or Associate Vice Presidents within UW Finance. •Participate in standing committees and meetings to support the HR initiatives of the larger UW environment. •Other general administrative duties

Required Qualifications: •Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, or related field; AND •5 or more years of increasingly responsible Human Resources experience; or equivalent education and experience. •Proficiency with recruiting high volumes of highly skilled staff, with particular focus on technical skill sets; •Significant experience with complex employee relations issues, requiring considerable documentation; •Experience creating custom management training, to include culture development for new teams; •Management-level experience in the HR and/or Payroll domains; •Supervisory and office management experience. Demonstrated experience working with large, highly structured personnel systems; •Proven leadership, communication, team building and problem solving skills; •Demonstrated ability to effectively address complex and sensitive administrative issues; •Ability to work well under pressure, deadlines, and changing priorities; •Ability to work with diverse people with tact, diplomacy, discretion, sensitivity, and confidentiality
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except where there are legal requirements such as license/certification/registration.
Desired Qualifications: •Experience in a large university, medical center or other large enterprise •Master's degree; •Experience with UW financial and HR/payroll systems; and •Experience with Workday
