The successful candidate will be the primary HR partner for Penn Dental Medicine staff and ensure alignment and exceptional service delivery across multiple HR priorities, including diversity and inclusion initiatives, talent acquisition, organizational effectiveness, learning and education programs, staff/employee relations, Workday operations, engagement/recognition, equal opportunity, performance management and progressive discipline and compensation/total rewards. The HR Director will manage a Faculty/Staff Coordinator and provide development, coaching, day-to-day leadership in partnership with the Deanâ™s Office and the Faculty Affairs Director/Chief of Staff for Penn Dental Medicine.
The ideal HR partner and leader will appreciate the goals and culture of Penn Dental Medicine and make HR recommendations and lead initiatives to build community, belonging and inclusion with staff, faculty and student communities. The successful candidate in this role must have a passion for delivering high-quality service, a demonstrated ability to develop and mentor staff and faculty communities, manage large-scale projects with diverse groups of people and have the ability to work both independently and cooperatively with various audiences of faculty, staff and leadership across Penn Dental Medicine.
Reporting to the Dean of Penn Dental Medicine and with a dotted line to University Human Resources, the Director oversees all human resource management functions at Penn Dental Medicine and is a trusted advisor to the Dean and the executive leadership team.Â The HR Director must exhibit exceptional judgement, integrity and discretion and have the ability to manage through ambiguity in a matrixed, growth-focused and constantly changing environment.
Oversee and direct strategic human resources functions in partnership with University Human Resources including diversity and inclusion initiatives, talent acquisition, organizational effectiveness, learning and education programs, staff/employee relations, Workday operations, engagement/recognition, equal opportunity, performance management and progressive discipline and compensation and total rewards.
Partner closely with the Dean, executive leadership team and various clinical, research, academic and operational support directors and managers to ensure that HR decisions, policies and practices align with Penn Dental Medicine and University goals and vision.
Review and analyze compensation requests and work with the Dental Schoolâ™s assigned compensation contact, the Compensation Manager to manage midyear pool and screen requests within compensation parameters.
Lead the continued development and implementation of HR processes in Workday for Penn Dental Medicine.
Manage performance management and ongoing feedback/performance appraisal processes to move the organizational toward optimal performance.Â
Train and consult with supervisors/managers to successfully develop staff and in addressing corrective/disciplinary actions.Â
Evaluate and manage departmental HR budget and partner with Fiscal Operations / Business Administration and Vice Dean and Chief Financial Officer to actively monitor headcount, talent planning and focus on increasing strategic and operational effectiveness at Penn Dental Medicine.Proactively identify coaching and development opportunities to build and strengthen leadership capabilities.Â
Counsel and advise employees and managers on complex employee and labor relations issues ensuring compliance with University policies and employment laws and regulations.Â Facilitates issue resolution, helping to create and implement effective solutions.Drive results through the establishment of key metrics and success measures that ensure accountability, and improve quality and operational efficiency, with a focus on levers that enable continuous improvement.Â
Manage organizational change efforts including suggesting revisions and creation of improved organizational structure, clarifying roles and responsibilities, defining selection criteria for key positions, conducting gap analysis and job redesign/job-sharing, and promoting consistency across job descriptions and conducting skills assessments as needed.
Lead diversity and inclusion initiatives including active participation and leadership in the committee for cultural growth. Support proactive listening and engagement by facilitating focus groups and interviews on organizational climate issues; analyze data from surveys and lead staff engagement follow-up in partnership with executive leadership team.Â
Participate on Penn Dental Medicine taskforces and committees. Collaborate and partner with other University offices in support of the goals of Penn Dental Medicine and the University.
Actively promote and develop new cross-organization programs to support professional development for staff.Â Identify opportunities for professional development, career ladders and talent planning.
Make sound, well-informed, and objective decisions.Â Understand the impact and implications of decisions and commit to action even in uncertain situations to accomplish organizational goals.
Lead from the front and drive accountability across the organization with a hands-on approach to problem solving and focus on ethical and sustainable decision making.
A Bachelorâ™s Degree is required.Â Masterâ™s degree is preferred.Â 7 to 10 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.Â Human resources healthcare, hospital or dental operations management experience is desirable as the position is responsible for leading projects that require strong interpersonal conflict resolution, employee relations and coaching skills in a clinical service delivery environment.
Excellent organizational and customer service skills a must; previous experience managing HR professionals/HR service delivery desirable.Â Demonstrated ability to initiate and implement a wide range of programs independently and in collaboration with other professionals.Â Demonstrated ability to use technology such as Microsoft Office, Workday and various analytical tools.Â Strategic thinking, influencing skills and ability to lead change are essential.Â Understands the impact of change on people, processes, procedures, leadership and organizational culture.Â Knowledge of change management principles, strategies and techniques required for effectively planning, implementing, and evaluating change in the organization.Â
Ability manage to conflict effectively, tackle complex problems and gain consensus and commitment when working with various stakeholders.Â Build diverse, collaborative teams and comfortable working collaboratively with multiple stakeholders.Â Acumen in managing and building diversity and navigating through multicultural issues and dynamics in the workplace.
Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, along with the ability to manage multiple and competing demands.Â Strong ability to infuse energy in team environments and must have excellent assessment, planning, development and implementation skills.Â Working knowledge of Workday is strongly preferred.
