This position is supervised by the Assistant Dean and is under the general direction of the Dean and Assistant Dean of Humanities, coordinates and supervises the Academic Human Resources Unit. The Academic HR office serves approximately 139 Academic FTE including Senate faculty and continuing lecturers. This position supervises staff in the Academic HR office including an Academic Analyst and two Payroll Assistants. The Academic HR Manager serves as a key member of the Dean's administrative leadership team.
Provides direct supervision typically to professionals or skilled technical employees. Functions as advisor to unit and administration. Analyzes and resolves problems, interprets policies (e.g., fiscal management, HR, contracts and grants, resource management in defined areas) and demonstrates solid subject matter knowledge. Exercises judgment within defined procedures and policies to determine appropriate action. Supervises staff to assure accountability and stewardship of department resources (operational, financial, and human) in compliance with departmental goals and objectives.
The position is responsible for coordination and supervision of the Academic Human Resources Unit in the Division of Humanities, including, but not limited to: academic personnel, affirmative action, recruitment, employee relations, employment, appointments, personnel reviews, leaves, separations, transfers, compensation and payroll. Leadership responsibilities include demonstrating sensitivity to the needs of an increasingly diverse workforce; ensuring equal employment opportunity and leading the unit's good faith efforts to meet established affirmative action goals; promoting and maintaining a climate conducive to productive work, hospitable to creativity and innovation and inclusive in regards to opportunity for professional success.
Receives assignments in the form of objectives with goals and the process by which to meet goals. Provides direction to academic HR staff according to established policies and management guidance. Administers academic HR policies that directly affect subordinate staff. Recommends changes to department policies and practices. Identifies risks and responds accordingly. Provides priority setting and work flow analysis. Responsible for the activities of a section or department with responsibility for results.

Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
Requires strong knowledge of organization and system academic HR polices, guidelines, and procedures.
Requires political acumen and risk management awareness to prevent potentially litigious personnel actions.
Comprehensive understanding of the academic review process.
Ability to provide guidance and coaching of process and policies to individual academics, unit management, and various committee groups.
