The School of Social has an outstanding opportunity for a Human Resources Manager (75%FTE)Reporting to the HR Director, the HR Manager works directly with staff and serves as the lead for department HR support. The HR Manager collaborates with management on areas regarding recruitment, diversity, performance management, HR policies, employee relations, progressive discipline, training, strategic planning, and organizational development. This position will require a high level of independence to manage the human resource aspects of a very complex department including faculty searches, staff hiring/counseling/termination, and resources for faculty and staff. This position will have a high impact on both the School as well as the greater UW community. It will require the highest level of professionalism, leadership, communication skills, organizational and analytical skills, and professional knowledge. This position is expected to be an expert in the area of recruitment of faculty and staff within the School. This position is a key to the smooth operation of the School and is the first line of problem solving, resolution, and change implementation (continuous improvement) of the department.Duties & ResponsibilitiesManage employee hiring process, extensions, annual evaluation process/tracking, promotion and reclassification process, separation, and pay changes. (40%) Consult with hiring managers to develop job description, recommend job titles, advise on salary ranges, compare offers for internal equity, and communicate offers to potential new hires. Work with Research/grant/budget staff on confirming funding availability. Review applications with managers when appropriate. Request and track hiring matrices from hiring managers. Work with hiring managers on standardized hiring questions. Communicate new hire info to facilities/SSW Tech. Work with Director to direct staff performance management and appraisal functions for the School, including consulting with supervisors and managers around the development of performance criteria and the implementation of regular performance evaluations for both classified and professional staff. Manage promotion and reclassification process for staff.Manage new hire orientations and take a lead role in streamlining SSW onboarding process (25%) Work directly with the Director of SSW IT on developing the new onboarding software and processes for all of SSW. Work with Director of Finance, HR Director, Student Services, Admissions, Communications, and Faculty on meeting the ongoing and changing needs of their units. Work directly with supervisors/managers to train them on new processes and troubleshoot issues as they arise. Work directly with employees on how to navigate onboarding system Identify needs for additional policy development and/or clarification and write policy and procedural guidelines as appropriate. Oversee, manage SSW employee separation process. Conduct exit interviews for staff and across the School as necessary, collect University equipment, system access, etc.Handle tier 1 employee relations issues under the direction of the HR Director (15%) Work with supervisors and staff on employee performance issues with classified staff. Manage and coordinate with campus HR and union for all formal and final counseling plans, as well as recommendation for dismissals and grievances in conjunction with SSW HR Director.HR administrative support within SSW (15%) Create and facilitate training workshops, working sessions, presentations - Facilitating/leading training workshops would be once a quarter for 2 hours. Prep for those varies depending on which person on the HR Team is taking lead each quarter. Create, update, and maintain physical and electronic employee files - this task should take less than 30 minutes a week, but will need to be done consistently. SSW Health and Safety Group - this position will be looking at writing policies for the school. These policies will be based off the priorities of the SSW facilities manager and the campus level Group 4 Health and Safety Committee recommendations. Employee retention efforts - looking at data and programs from public and private sectors in order to create a robust and comprehensive employee retention plan for SSW. This may involve event planning, chairing meetings, committee participation, and frequent interaction with the HR Director and HR Team. Manage HR reporting and metrics; provides analysis to leadership. Metrics may include turnover, staffing, training, compensation analyses. Provide consultation and HR administrative support to committees within SSW.Other duties as assigned (5%)Requirements Bachelor's Degree in Social Sciences, Humanities, or Related Degree.(Equivalent experience may substitute for degree requirement.) At least three years of relevant work experience. Demonstrated ability to manage and lead employees. Proven leadership, communication, team building, and problem solving capability. Demonstrated ability to analyze, develop, and implement process improvements. Ability to balance multiple projects simultaneously. Experience working directly with faculty, administrators, and directors. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written and oral). Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Ability to write effective, useful, and timely documentation. Desired Human resources experience in an academic setting. Master's Degree in Public Administration, Business Administration, or other related field. Experience working with both Union and Non-Union employees. Knowledge of Washington State employment law. Knowledge of University of Washington human resource policies. Experience with UW systems: UWHires, WorkDay.
