The HR Director position is the lead position meeting the needs of the school as it relates to administering human resources functions. The position reports to the Assistant Dean for Finance and Operations and has regular interaction with the Dean, Associate Deans, Assistant Deans, Area Chairs, faculty, staff and other administrative offices within the school and University Office of Human Resources. This position provides consultation and guidance to school leadership, faculty and staff to manage the school to meet all human resource needs. This position acts as a liaison with the University's Office of Human Resources (OHR), Academic Personnel Office (APO), and Equal Opportunity and Compliance Office (EOCO) in all areas of human resource management within the school. This position is a position of trust that requires handling matters discretely and professionally. The school has two HR staff, this position and an HR Specialist position, which the Director of Human Resources would supervise. There are a high level of transactions processed between the two positions and requires this position to work efficiency, effectively and with a high level of accuracy. Particular duties include, but not limited to, completing all tasks related to all EHRA and EHRA Non Faculty permanent and temporary hires, funding swaps, Annual Raise Process (ARP), reappointments, end of appointments, all paid and un-paid leave of absences, benefits, recruitments, managing the appointment promotion and tenure (APT) and post-tenure review processes for faculty positions. Additionally, this position manages and oversees duties of the one HR Specialist position primarily responsible for SHRA permanent and temporary employees, TA/RA/GA graduate student hires, temporary/intermittent temporary/student assistant hires, career banding, time management system (TIM), leave, and benefits.
Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree and two years of progressively responsible professional human resources management experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be from appropriately accredited institutions.
Candidate must possess excellent oral and written communication skills, sound business judgment, tact and diplomacy, and the ability to interact with personnel at all levels of the School/Division and University.
Demonstrated ability to work in a team.
Demonstrated excellent customer service skills.
Self-motivated and ability to act independently.
Intermediate experience with Windows including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
Demonstrated attention to detail.
Discretion with personnel information and data protection.
Ability to be able to move/lift boxes/files of 20-30 pounds with our without accommodation.
Prior experience working in a higher education setting.
Familiarity with internal UNC-CH systems and procedures.
Strong understanding of the faculty appointments, promotions, and tenure process (APT).
PHR, SPHR, SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, SPHR, or an equivalent professional qualification preferred.
