Overview: As a Human Resource Generalist for the Duluth Campus of the University of Minnesota, you will be responsible for supporting initiatives by consulting/partnering with units as it relates to employee engagement, training & development, talent management and compensation administration. The Generalist serves as a member of a consulting team that works together to investigate, collect and analyze HR data on a broad range of issues including: Employee/labor relations, faculty human resources, organizational effectiveness, policy interpretation and guidance, classification and compensation, conflict resolution and management. The Generalist will work as a liaison between administrative/collegiate units and UMD Human Resources to achieve day?to day operational goals.
Major Responsibilities: Recruiting & Classification – 25% Consult/Partner with units on the recruiting and classification processes for P&A, Civil Service and Bargaining unit for assigned units including: • Writing of job descriptions, specifying qualifications and alignment with the classification system. • Posting and advertising positions, including advising and coaching on the use of the University Recruiting System. Identify qualified candidates • Advising on interview practices, reference checks, offer letters etc • Determining salary offers for new staff in relation to others in the assigned unit. Coordinate with the appropriate Director and Vice Chancellor & Campus HR Office.
Training & Development – 15% • Creating programs to support leaders in managing an engaged workforce. • Develop training programs to identified needs of the leadership team. • Present training programs to supervisors and employees on areas identified. • Conduct team building programs with supervisors to strengthen team work. • Evaluate training programs and identify additional training needs.
Employee/Labor Relations – 50% Advise on employee relations issues and provide guidance on policies and procedures related to the: • Performance and performance improvement plans coordinating with UMD HR consultants. Provide coaching to individual managers on how to improve performance of individual employees and recommend steps to resolve performance issues. Assist units in writing letters of expectations and improvement plans. • Grievance and conflict resolution processes. Prepares managers and supervisors for grievance presentations. Assists in writing grievance decisions, disciplinary actions, letters of termination and other related documents. • Interpretation of civil service rules and bargaining unit contracts in consultation with the UMD HR Team. • Conduct initial inquiries related to employee disputes related to performance, diversity & inclusion as needed. Prepare summaries and work with team to define recommendations and plans of action. • Provide support in the areas of training and development. Anticipate needs and collect data needed to assist in identifying gaps and planning processes.
Compensation Coordination – 5% • Administers and oversight of the administrative unit P&A/Civil Service, and student compensation plans in coordination with Campus HR.
General HR Responsibilities – 5% • Apply University & campus policies & procedures to the administrative units. • Collect HR data and analyze to monitor HR metrics and make recommendations to improve the human resource systems of the campus as a whole.
Required Qualifications: • BA/BS in Human Resources or related field plus 2 years professional HR related work experience; or a combination of related education and professional HR work experience to equal 6 years. • Exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate in a variety of methods to a diverse campus population. • Demonstrated analytical and problem?solving skills and abilities. • Experience working in a collaborative environment with individuals from diverse communities and cultures.
Preferred Qualifications: • Professional human resource credentials such as PHR, SPHR, IPMA… • More than three years of human resource experience. • Work experience in a matrix, large, complex organization with multiple stakeholders. • Prior experience in higher education in general and the University of Minnesota in particular.
