SUMMARY OF POSITION Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), the Director of Human Resources (DHR) is responsible for the overall administration, coordination, and evaluation of the Human Resources function. The DHR ensures WIS practices are in compliance with state and federal personnel policies and procedures and works closely with the Head of School, the Associate Head of School, members of the Business Office, and division and department heads, in order to establish and communicate HR policies and practices. The DHR supports the School’s mission by attracting and retaining the best faculty and staff.
MAJOR FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES The Director of Human Resources is a 12-month position, with key responsibilities outlined below. The CFO and/or Head of School may assign additional duties in support of School objectives.
Create, manage and oversee recruitment policies and procedures to employ highly skilled and trained exempt and non-exempt professionals.
Participate, in conjunction with senior administration, in the advertising, vetting, and interviewing of all applicants.
Prepare offer letters for new hires, letters of intent for faculty, annual contracts for faculty, and salary confirmation letters for regular staff.
Oversee all aspects of onboarding new hires (e.g. criminal records checks and required documentation) and offboarding departing employees (e.g. exit interviews and termination of benefits).
Create and continuously update an appraisal system for all faculty and staff that exemplifies best practices.
Manage, in consultation with an immigration attorney, applications for J-1 exchange teacher program, H-1B and permanent residence.
Oversee the process for staff seeking citizenship.
Develop and oversee all employee benefit programs, including: health insurance, dental insurance, life and long-term disability insurance, self-funded salary continuation (short- term disability, parental leave, FMLA), flexible spending plans, supplemental vision, prepaid legal, 403(b) retirement plan, COBRA, and retiree benefits.
Oversee annual retirement audit and Form 5500 preparation.
Manage Workers Compensation claims.
Provide analysis and counsel to the Head, Associate Head, and CFO in the establishment and implementation of HR policies and programs that are in compliance with all mandated regulations.
Communicate changes in School HR policies and procedures to all relevant stakeholders.
Update employee handbook and other relevant documents.
Ensure payroll system and personnel files are up-to-date.
Monitor wage payment and leave practices and policies, ensuring compliance with staff association agreement and School policies.
Consult with employment law counsel as appropriate and necessary.
Participate in staff association contract negotiations and work with staff association leadership to resolve issues.
Supervise the Human Resources Administrator.
Create and maintain recruitment budget.
Plan and implement trainings, meetings with benefits contractors, and wellness initiatives for staff and faculty.
Complete annual surveys (salary and others) such as NAIS-DASL, EEO-1, etc.
Maintain knowledge of industry standards and trends as it relates to employment and other related legislation.
KEY QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCES
At least seven years experience in HR administration
Ability to prioritize, meet deadlines, work effectively under pressure, and pay attention to detail
HR certification from SHRM or HRCI, SPHR or SHRM-CP preferred
Passion for WIS’s mission
Strong communication skills, a sense of humor, humility, and empathy
Commitment to diversity and inclusion
Previous experience at an international school and/or cultural fluency derived from international experience is a plus
Fluency in a language in addition to English would be an asset, but is not required

Commitment to the intensive study of a second language is a core principle, with Pre-School, Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten classes taught entirely in French or Spanish. All instruction in Grades 1-5 is “dual language” in English and either French or Spanish. Chinese is an option beginning in Grade 6. Typically, one half to three-quarters of WIS graduates earn the Bilingual IB Diploma, demonstrating fluency in two languages.
